Nominations open for Tom Barton Award 2023

The ICE has opened nominations for the 2023 Tom Barton Award for eliminating error.

Organised in collaboration with GIRI, the ICE Tom Barton Award honours GIRI’s founding director Tom Barton, who died in 2020. A fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Tom was instrumental in the formation of GIRI and had a passion for getting it right. The Award seeks to honour his legacy and is open to individuals and project teams in construction and engineering who have demonstrated innovation, commitment, and excellence in implementing new ideas or initiatives to eliminate error.

The inaugural Tom Barton Award was won by Gavin Ford from Costain for his research into prevention of nonconformance and rework in construction.

The award is open to members and non-members of the ICE and GIRI, but all nominations must be endorsed by an ICE member. We particularly encourage nominations for younger professionals in engineering and construction who have challenged existing thinking, or developed new processes to improve quality, productivity, safety, and sustainability.

Nominations can be for individuals or for project teams and nomination forms should be completed and submitted to knowledge@ice.org.uk by 31 January 2023. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The winner will be announced at the ICE Awards ceremony in October 2023.
