Learn how to reduce errors in the design process

The Get It Right Initiative has launched a new, free-to-use e-learning programme to help drive down errors within the construction sector. It is based on the principles set out in the GIRI Design Guide, a best-practice document addressing errors that are rooted in the project formation and design process.

The latest resource from GIRI comes as construction programmes grow more complex and pressure mounts on government and industry to deliver schemes that demonstrate good value for taxpayers. It builds on GIRI's longstanding work to eliminate error through training, helping improve quality, productivity, safety and sustainability.

GIRI research shows that avoidable error costs the UK construction industry up to £25 billion each year. Design is a factor in five of the top ten root causes of error, creating a substantial opportunity to deliver benefits. A recent GIRI training pilot across 25 UK projects identified – and avoided - £85,509,000 in costs related to design. The new e-learning programme aims to help construction professionals to reduce these costs by eradicating error in the design process.

The e-learning course highlights that reducing error in design is not solely the responsibility of architects and designers. Design touches all aspects of the construction process - from clients developing a clear and comprehensive brief, to suppliers providing materials that perform in line with requirements. Research from the Centre for Construction Best Practice shows that the closer to RIBA Stage 0 that contractors are appointed, the lower the average cost overrun for the client.

Consisting of four modules that can be completed in stages, the Design Guide e-learning is a flexible, self-paced programme and the whole course takes about two hours to complete. It has been developed with insight from architects and designers, clients, contractors and consultants, with generous support from GIRI members. It covers:

  • the root causes of error in the design process
  • how to establish and maintain a robust design process
  • why early contractor insight sets projects up for success
  • how to ensure well-communicated design information
  • effective 'opening up' and ‘closing down' of projects.

Cliff Smith, executive director at GIRI, said: “GIRI’s Design Guide has long been recognised as an industry standard for improving quality and reducing error in construction. Our new e-learning programme now brings the guide to life and will enable a much wider cross-section of the industry to upskill.

“We hope that it will be a valuable tool for all construction professionals and training teams, as we strive to improve quality and productivity across the industry by driving cultural and behavioural change.”
