Help us find the next winner of the Tom Barton Award

Nominations have opened for the 2025 Tom Barton Award.

The Tom Barton Award recognises engineering and construction professionals who have demonstrated excellence in implementing initiatives to improve quality, productivity, safety and sustainability by eliminating error.

Now in its fourth year, the ICE Tom Barton Award is organised in collaboration with GIRI and honours GIRI’s founding director Tom Barton, who died in 2020. A fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Tom was instrumental in the formation of GIRI and had a passion for getting it right. The Award seeks to honour his legacy and is open to individuals and project teams in construction and engineering who have demonstrated innovation, commitment, and excellence in implementing new ideas or initiatives to eliminate error.

Previous winners include Gavin Ford from Costain, Professor Perry Shard from John Sisk & Son and Pedro Carvalho Costa from WSP.

The award is open to members and non-members of the ICE and GIRI, but all nominations must be endorsed by an ICE member. We particularly encourage nominations for younger professionals in engineering and construction who have challenged existing thinking, or developed new processes to improve quality, productivity, safety, and sustainability.

If you have a colleague who has gone above and beyond in implementing initiatives to eliminate error, consider nominating them for this prestigious award.

The winner will be invited to attend the ICE awards ceremony to receive their award, and their achievement will be publicised by GIRI through our website, newsletter and social media platforms.

Nominations are open now and the deadline for submissions is 18 December 2024. Details of the award and the nomination process can be found on the ICE website
