GIRI Members' Meeting 8 April 2019, ICE

 

The second quarterly GIRI Members Meeting of 2019 took place earlier this month the Institution of Civil Engineers with representation from 31 member firms, alongside new potential members and organisations from the GIRI network. Presentations on current GIRI activity prompted engaging and enthusiastic discussions. Coffee and networking followed where new connections were made between GIRI Members.

Key updates included:

GIRI's Design Guide is to be used as the basis of a new module on the ICE Learning Hub; the Guide is also being promoted with other industry professional bodies.

The GIRI word continues to be spread through workshops, conferences and Constructing Excellence meetings across the country.

John Taylor of TR Control Solutions gave a presentation on Applying Adaptive Learning for Zero Defects in Construction, an Innovate UK-funded project to develop an application that will use adaptive learning to enable the role of site workers. GIRI member firm BAM Nuttall is already assisting with the project.

Paul Lowe from Weightmans updated on the forthcoming UK Government consultation on Building a Safer Future - An Implementation Plan. GIRI are well-placed to give a coordinated response to this consultation because of its broad range of membership and the work already being done in the areas of cultural change, best practice and leadership.

GIRI's working group on Measuring Quality Performance is looking at ways of measuring error performance, with the aim of having a common language and developing a metric similar to the AFR used in assessing health & safety performance.

GIRI's CITB training modules are developing with very positive outcomes. Member firms have been running pilot courses which have resulted in excellent feedback; 200 have done the Supervisors' and Managers' Training on the Hinkley Point C project. All the courses will have been finalized by the autumn, with planning now turning to the roll-out across industry.
