Design Guide e-learning module spotlight: Setting the conditions for success

6 Aug 26

An overview of the first module in our new Design Guide e-learning programme that focuses on laying solid foundations for a project from the outset.

Setting the conditions for success is the first of three core modules in the GIRI Design Guide e-learning. It is structured around four topics that are designed to ensure the right conditions to set up projects for successful outcomes.

These topics are:

  • Robust approach
  • Investing in design
  • Culture
  • Brief

Each topic provides information on how to apply the relevant principles from the GIRI Design Guide and includes an example scenario to show how the results are directly affected by that guidance.

Topic one: Robust approach

In this module, you will learn:

  • The elements needed to establish and maintain a rigorous design process.
  • Why clear roles, well-structured processes, and agreed milestones can help the whole team work together effectively.
  • Example scenario showing what can go wrong on a project without a robust approach
  • Example scenario showing what can go right on a project by establishing a robust approach from the start.
  • How to establish a rigorous design process.
  • Questions to help you reflect on how the topic applies to you and your role and help you identify the most important actions you can take.

Topic two: Investing in design

In this module, you will learn:

  • Why early input from the right people helps spot risks, test ideas, and develop practical solutions.
  • Example scenario showing what can go wrong without sufficient investment in design.
  • Recommendations from the GIRI Design Guide.
  • The impact of late design changes.
  • Example scenario showing what can go right by investing in design.
  • Questions to help you reflect on how the topic applies to you and your role and help you identify the most important actions you can take.

Topic three: Culture

In this module, you will learn:

  • Why a culture built on trust, openness, and collaboration helps teams solve problems early and focus on shared goals.
  • Example scenario showing what can go wrong on a project with the wrong culture.
  • Recommendations from the GIRI Design Guide.
  • The benefits of establishing the right culture.
  • Example scenario showing what can go right on a project with the right culture.
  • Questions to help you reflect on how the topic applies to you and your role and help you identify the most important actions you can take.

Topic four: Brief

In this module, you will learn:

  • Why a well-prepared brief can reduce design changes, construction errors, cost increases and delays.
  • Example scenario showing what can go wrong on a project without a well-prepared brief in place.
  • Recommendations from the GIRI Design Guide.
  • The benefits of a structured process and an effective brief.
  • Example scenario showing what can go right on a project with a well-prepared brief in place.
  • The characteristics of an effective brief.
  • Questions to help you reflect on how the topic applies to you and your role and help you identify the most important actions you can take.
